The Colosseum is also known as the Flavian Amphitheater. After the fall of the Roman Empire, it fell into neglect. As a source of building materials, its ivory travertine marble was looted, and as a result, it destroyed much of the original structure. Fortunately, some of its former glory was restored due to a series of renovations that was concluded in 2016. In order to fully appreciate this arena and join the group of almost 6 million visitors a year, you’ll need to learn a few tips.

1. In order to avoid the Roman heat and crowds, visit during the off-season.
It’s best to avoid the peak summer season and the infamous humidity tagging along with it, even though a Roman summer holiday sounds quite appealing. The low season from November through March is considered the best time to visit the open-air Colosseum. It becomes easier to properly explore the Colosseum due to relatively mild winter temperatures. Also keep in mind that during Christmas and Easter holidays, tourism and crowds tend to briefly increase. Make sure to avoid visiting between 11 am and 4 pm if you have to travel in the summer when the heat is at its worst.
2. Be prepared for long lines if you want to visit for free. And yes, you can!
Entrance to the Colosseum and more than 300 other museums managed by the government, gardens, monuments, and archaeological sites, are free on the first Sunday of each month. On the other hand, standard adult tickets cost 12 Euro. Just brace yourself for longer lines. Please note that there’s no option for special reservations and group tours during the free entry days.
3. Remember to buy your ticket before boarding, even though there are lots of public transport options.
From anywhere in central Rome, the Colosseum can be easily reached on foot or by public transport. There are dedicated bus (number 75), tram (Line 3), and metro (Line B) stops for the Colosseum, but make sure you purchase your public transport tickets prior to your arrival and don’t forget to validate the ticket upon boarding in order to avoid stiff fines.
4. In order to skip the line and have a more enriching experience, you need to pay for a guide.
In order to skip the lines, you need to take up a group tour which will be organized by the Colosseum management. You’ll be provided with a better sense of the site by an expert guide.
5. If you are an early bird, you can take advantage of the included admission to the Imperial Forum.
Right at opening time, which is 8:30 am, or 1-2 hours before closing, is considered the best time of day to visit the Colosseum. These timings are based on the sunset time and keep changing throughout the year. In order to breeze through the entrance, plan to arrive at least 30 minutes prior to the opening hour.
